The Best Faucet Water Filters of 2024 Tested and Reviewed
Whether you have poor-tasting tap water or rely on well water like millions of U.S. households, faucet-mount filters offer an affordable solution for clean, fresh drinking water. These easy-to-install devices remove common contaminants while allowing you to seamlessly switch between filtered and unfiltered water. To help you with finding the best faucet water filters around, we’ve bought and tested the most popular models in our lab.
After many hours of testing, the PUR Faucet Filter FM2500V was chosen as our best-to-buy model as it provides the most well-rounded protection while also being affordable (and PUR is a reputable name in the industry). If lead filtering is a major criterion for you, we recommend looking into the Brita Faucet Mount System, which handily filtered out all traces of lead in a water sample during our test.
Everything We Recommend
The PUR FM2500V as our Editor’s Pick due to its blend of proven reliability and excellent value. The filter offers great filtering performance for the price, and being one of the most well-known names in the industry, it’s easy for us to recommend the PUR FM2500V right out of the gate.
If lead contamination is a big concern where you live, the Brita Basic can act as your last line of defense against the dirty water. Brita’s had a great track record of building lead-filtering filters, so we weren’t surprised when the testing results gave the Basic a high score in this portion.
The Waterdrop WD-FC-01 clearly sets the benchmark for faucet filter performance in our tests, surpassing every model in our database. As such, if pure filtering power is your priority, this model is the clear leader.
For those not dealing with serious concerns like lead contamination and rather, you’d prefer something that works well and looks good, then the PUR's PFM350V is a stand-out pick with its innovative horizontal design. During dishwashing, for instance, the unique sideways configuration will keep your sink space clear.
If your water is relatively fine, but still want the comfort of having a filter on your tap, then the WD-FC-06 will be a great choice. Other than having an impressive flow rate – 1.3 GPM when attached to a 2.2 GPM faucet, the WD-FC-06 also performed excellently in our chlorine water test and was able to remove all traces of the smelly compound from the water.
How We Test
Our performance testing evaluates faucet-mount filters in three key areas: lead removal, chlorine filtration, and water flow rate.
For Lead testing, we pump water containing 100-200 milligrams per liter of lead (Pb+2) through each filter. We then analyze the filtered water to assess the filter's lead removal effectiveness.
The Chlorine test challenges filters with water containing 10 mg/l of chlorine—more than double the U.S. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL) of 4 mg/l. To achieve a perfect score, filters must reduce chlorine levels to 0 mg/l, which we verify using specialized test kits.
Flow rate testing measures water output over 20 seconds using precise measuring tools.
While we looked at the filter's Performance, we also tested the filter’s Design and Ease of Use. To see the detailed testing methodology, check out the guidelines on How We Test and Score Our Faucet-Mount Water Filters!
How We Choose
Our recommendations are based on rigorous testing results, with high-performing models more likely to make our list. In addition to evaluating each filter's performance, design quality, and unique features, we also compare them in terms of the trustworthiness of their branding and the pricing of the individual products.

Best to Buy
The PUR FM2500V as our Editor’s Pick due to its blend of proven reliability and excellent value. The filter offers great filtering performance for the price, and being one of the most well-known names in the industry, it’s easy for us to recommend the PUR FM2500V right out of the gate.
Things We Like
- Affordable
- Excellent chlorine filtering ability
- Easy installation and servicing with "one-click" system
- Lightweight and compact design
- A filter change indicator
Things We Don’t Like
- Low flow rate in filtering mode
- Weak grip on faucet due to the one-click system
- Flimsy routing valve’s handle
- The plastic construction can be problematic for long-term durability
The PUR FM2500V shines at contaminant removal. It was able to cleanse all traces of chlorinated water when tested and also demonstrated strong lead-filtering performance when we pitched it against lead-infested water. The only complaint we have is the slow filtering flow rate, managing just 0.44 gallons per minute (GPM) in our testing.
A PUR's "Mineral Core" filter cartridge comes with the filter. Other than filtering water, it’ll also replenish the water with natural minerals, making it tastier.
A highlight of the FM2500V’s design is the "one-click" installation system. Rather than swiveling the filter into place on your faucet’s head, there’s an adapter for you to install on your faucet. Then, the filter housing itself simply clicks into place and anchors itself on the adapter using a receptacle. Removing the filter is as simple as pressing a latch. The new design makes it very intuitive to change out the filters, but it’s rather flimsy (and leaked quite a lot!)
The PUR FM2500V also comes with an indicator light to tell you when exactly you need to swap out your filter. The battery in the indicator lasts 2-3 years. Each filter handles 100 gallons, lasting about 3 months (assuming you use one gallon per day). At $18 for two filters, the annual cost of running the FM2500V is no more than $34.

Brita Faucet Mount System
Best for Lead Filtering
If lead contamination is a big concern where you live, the Brita Basic can act as your last line of defense against the dirty water. Brita’s had a great track record of building lead-filtering filters, so we weren’t surprised when the testing results gave the Basic a high score in this portion.
Things We Like
- Excellent chlorine and lead filtration ability (nearly 100%).
- Looks premium with its chrome-plated housing.
- The routing valve’s handle is intuitive to use.
- Comes with a filter change indicator.
Things We Don’t Like
- The filter could be tugged out of the housing without depressing the filter release button.
- Leaks during filtration, necessitating the use of plumbing tape.
When tested against lead-contaminated water, the Brita filter was able to filter out much of the lead. If your water supply is lightly contaminated, the Brita Basic can help while you’re looking into more permanent solutions.
In other tests, the Brita did a commendable job. Against chlorinated water, it eliminated virtually all traces of chlorine. The filter delivers a moderate flow rate of about 0.7 GPM. While this isn't the fastest we've tested, most people will be alright with this. The filter cartridge has a 100-gallon capacity, which Brita suggests will last up to 4 months before requiring replacement.
Despite its plastic construction, the Brita Basic's chrome-plated exterior gives it a premium look that complements most kitchen designs. We did notice some minor design issues, such as a loose-fitting filter cartridge and the need for plumbing tape to prevent leaks. However, these are relatively minor concerns given the price point and strong filtration performance.
The included filter change indicator and intuitive routing valve make this unit particularly user-friendly, though more frequent filter replacements will be needed compared to higher-capacity models on the market.
The 100-gallon filter cartridge lasts about 3 months. While Brita no longer makes faucet filter replacements, you can buy third-party filters ($18 for a two-pack), which offer pretty similar performance and fit. And of course, you can count on an annual cost of about $34.

Waterdrop WD-FC-01
Best Performance
The Waterdrop WD-FC-01 clearly sets the benchmark for faucet filter performance in our tests, surpassing every model in our database. As such, if pure filtering power is your priority, this model is the clear leader.
Things We Like
- Excellent chlorine and lead filtration efficiency.
- Excellent filtering flow rate.
- Great build quality using food-grade plastic.
- The routing valve is solid and easy to use.
- Built-in filter life indicator.
Things We Don’t Like
- Unique but finicky installation system.
- Plastic construction makes long-term durability a concern.
- The battery for the indicator light can’t be changed.
We didn’t select the WD-FC-01 as our best-to-buy pick, opting instead for the PUR FM2500V as customers have reported important materials and information to be lacking from Waterdrop’s website and manuals.
The WD-FC-01 aced the chlorine test, bringing chlorine levels from 10+ mg/l down to virtually 0 mg/l. Its lead-cleansing performance is just as impressive. Our kit went from bright red, indicating heavy lead contamination, to straight gold, which means lead has dropped to a nearly undetectable level (by the kit) after the water’s been filtered.
But what’s truly amazing about this filter is the flow rate. While most faucet filters significantly restrict water pressure, the WD-FC-01 maintains an impressive 1.29 GPM when attached to a 2.2 GPM faucet - the second-fastest in our test, just behind the WD-FC-06. For comparison, many competitors struggle to reach even half this speed. This means you get thoroughly filtered water without the frustratingly slow trickle common to other filters.
Design-wise, the WD-FC-01 is built to last with sturdy stainless steel housing. Although the routing valve's handle is plastic, you can expect the filter to serve your house for years.
The WD-FC-01 comes with a 320-gallon filter capacity, which should easily last for more than six months of regular use. When you need a replacement, you can buy the Waterdrop WD-FF-01A filter cartridge. A three-pack runs for $33 – considering the capacity, each buy will last a year and some.

PUR Plus PFM350V
Best Design
For those not dealing with serious concerns like lead contamination and rather, you’d prefer something that works well and looks good, then the PUR's PFM350V is a stand-out pick with its innovative horizontal design. During dishwashing, for instance, the unique sideways configuration will keep your sink space clear.
Things We Like
- Excellent chlorine and lead filtration efficiency.
- Enhances flavor Innovative housing design and installation system.
- Replacement filter is readily available.
- A filter change indicator.
Things We Don’t Like
- While unique, the installation system of the filter is hard to figure out.
- Plastic construction makes long-term durability a concern.
The filter certainly looks the part of a premium filter, as well. The sleek, slate gray housing complements modern kitchen designs.
In both tests for chlorine and lead removal performance, the PFM350V did similarly great jobs – scoring perfect scores throughout. This impressive filtration comes from a sophisticated three-layer system combining activated carbon, ion exchange resin, and PUR's proprietary MineralCore™ technology, which, similar to the Brita, makes water taste crisper.
The filter's main drawback is its relatively slow flow rate of 0.44 GPM when attached to a 2.2 GPM faucet - one of the lowest we've tested. However, this trade-off may be worth it if space efficiency and aesthetics are keys for you.
Where this model really shines, though, is in its user-friendly features. The built-in electronic indicator uses a simple color-coding system (green, yellow, red) to show filter life, meaning there’s no guesswork about replacement timing.
The 100-gallon capacity means you’ll have to replace it every three months or so. But the good news is that PUR filters are common and relatively cheap – $18 for two. The annual cost won’t exceed $35 if you were to choose this filter.

Waterdrop WD-FC-06
Best Flowrate
If your water is relatively fine, but still want the comfort of having a filter on your tap, then the WD-FC-06 will be a great choice. Other than having an impressive flow rate – 1.3 GPM when attached to a 2.2 GPM faucet, the WD-FC-06 also performed excellently in our chlorine water test and was able to remove all traces of the smelly compound from the water.
Things We Like
- Excellent chlorine filtration efficiency.
- High filtering flow rate.
- Unique design and installation system.
- Replacement filters are readily available.
Things We Don’t Like
- While unique, the installation system is hard to figure out.
The filter core of the WD-FC-06 adds minerals to the water it filters, too, giving you crisper-tasting water. It’s unable to deal with lead, however, so only take the pick if you’re sure you’re not dealing with any contaminant more serious than chlorine.
With a 320-gallon capacity, each filter core should last for around three months under normal use. While it lacks a filter change indicator and uses plastic construction rather than metal, these compromises help keep the price low. Especially when you factor in the uniqueness of its modular design, which allows you to remove the filter compartment and pieces of the housing for storage - though the unconventional installation process might take some getting used to.
The WD-FC-06's 304 food-grade stainless steel construction gives it a sleek and luxurious appearance. You can fit it into any kitchen design and it’ll look great. The material itself is durable enough to last through years of wears and tears, as well.
The WD-FC-06 uses the same filter cartridge as its sibling, the WD-FC-01. Having a maximum capacity of 320 gallons, it can pump out fresh water for up to six months or more before needing a replacement. Once you’re there, a pack of three filter cores goes for around $33 – considering how durable it is, it’ll easily last you through the year.
