Black+Decker is easily one of the most recognizable names in the industry, so expectations are always high. Fortunately, the Pivot Vac 20V largely lives up to the hype, packing serious power into a clever, robustly built frame. But it isn't without its quirks. Let’s dive into a closer look at where this sleek handheld shines, and where it falls short.

This Black+Decker Pivot VAC delivers exceptional suction, effortlessly handling everything from fine flour dust to larger debris, like crushed corn flakes or pet hair, on cushioned fabric surfaces and car interiors. Its high-power motor excels on porous materials and thick carpeting, where it pulls out stubborn, trapped dirt with ease. The only drawback of the Black+Decker Pivot is its somewhat limited runtime compared to models with larger battery capacities.

8.0 Fabric Chair Cleaning

In just 1 minute and 20 seconds, it cleared 95% of the seat surface, easily dealing with the spongy nature of the cushions. While it’s not the quickest unit we’ve tested for this task, it remains highly effective against dust, crushed snacks, and pet hair—even without a motorized brush.

9.2 Car Cleaning

The vacuum excels here, achieving high degrees of cleanliness in both areas. With scores of 90% on car seats and 95% on footwell carpets, it’s the most effective model for this task. Furthermore, it accomplished this in under 1 minute and 30 seconds, which is the second-best result we’ve recorded.

5.1 Battery Performance

Compared to models with more battery cells, the vacuum's 9-minute and 30-second runtime can feel a bit limited. However, when compared to competing models with similar target use cases, like the Shark WandVac or the Black+Decker AdvancedClean Swivel, it’s not shabby at all. It also recovers power efficiently; after a quick 5-minute cleanup, it tops up in no time, while a full charge from empty takes about 4 hours.

9.3 Design

Beyond raw performance, the Black+Decker Pivot VAC features an innovative pivoting nozzle that effectively cuts its storage size approximately in half. This design opens up tight cleaning angles that are inaccessible to standard fixed-nozzle models. Additionally, the nozzle integrates utility extensions, specifically a crevice tool and a brush tool, cleverly saving storage space for accessories.

Build quality is also excellent, utilizing durable and thick materials throughout. To protect the motor, a two-layer filtration system effectively traps heavy debris like dirt and sand, as well as fine dust and lint. This model also features a convenient charging stand that can even be mounted on walls.

In the Box

The vacuum ships in a blank, eco-friendly cardboard box rather than Black+Decker's signature vibrant packaging. While the bland packaging might surprise some buyers, it neatly houses all the essentials: the vacuum unit, a charging base, and the instruction manuals. 

Dimensions

The vacuum is about average in size and fits comfortably in typical cabinets, car trunks, or right on your desk or wall. When folded and placed on its charging dock, it barely takes up any space.

9.5 Build Quality

Every detail on the vacuum, from the integrated utility tools to the buttons, feels and looks premium thanks to its streamlined appearance. Although most of the components (save for the motor’s internal elements) are made of plastic to keep the unit lightweight, it’s a thick, high-quality plastic that doesn’t crack from occasional dings and bangs.

Despite the many intricate components required by the innovative pivoting design, none have shown any signs of degradation despite our frequent use. Specifically, all of the latching mechanisms—including the dirt compartment’s quick-release door and the main disassembly latch—still feel solid and satisfying. The buttons and switches are equally well-made; both the nozzle release button and the power switch feel responsive and easy to operate. One thing we did notice, however, is how easily the finish scratches, even from contact with wooden furniture.

9.0 Utility Features

The vacuum features a single-speed operation controlled by a simple switch. It also includes a clear power indicator that displays the charging status (blinking blue, then turning off when fully charged).

9.0 Filtration Quality

Two layers of filtration protect the vacuum motor: a plastic pre-filter mesh and a pleated filter. The mesh is specifically designed to trap sand and large debris, while the pleated filter catches everything from lint to fine dust. Similar to most handheld vacuums, replacing the pleated filter is recommended every 6 to 9 months to sustain optimal performance.

Motor Module

At maximum charge, this vacuum currently holds the spot for ‘most powerful’ in our database. It doesn’t draw much power while charging, but its battery voltage allows for ample suction power that puts the others we’ve tested to shame. One thing to note, however, is that this vacuum vents its air straight out the back toward the user, unlike most other models that vent to the sides.

Dirt Compartment

While it’s not the most generous in terms of holding capacity, this is more than understandable considering its highly space-saving design. Furthermore, its clever quick-release door allows for quick emptying after every session.

Nozzle

The pivoting nozzle connects directly to and is part of the dirt compartment. It’s also integrated with a dusting brush that conveniently flips up and down and a crevice nozzle that can be pulled out for more focused suction.

Filter Module

The filter assembly comes off with the pivoting nozzle when it’s time for washing, which is very convenient for maintenance since it leaves the motor completely separated. As recommended by the manufacturer, the pleated filter should be replaced once every 6 to 9 months for optimal suction, depending on how regularly it is used.

Charging Adaptor

The charging dock is rated for a 120V electrical grid only, so make sure you have the appropriate voltage, especially if you’re outside the US. The dock can be mounted on a wall or platform, and the power cord is roughly 74 inches long.

Accessories

As mentioned previously, the vacuum cleaner has its dusting brush and crevice tool conveniently built into the nozzle, saving the user the trouble of finding storage space. However, there is no upholstery tool included, nor is there one sold separately.

While the 10-minute runtime is a bit limited in comparison to more long-lasting handheld cleaners, it is perfect for quick vehicle touch-ups. Moreover, its useful dock lets users quickly bring it to a full charge in between sessions, ensuring it’s always at maximum cleaning power for every job.

While the vacuum cleaner is not the most lightweight option, it is nonetheless easy to handle. This maneuverability is primarily due to its compact, space-saving design and well-distributed weight, which ensure a comfortable grip. Although the handle design isn't particularly groundbreaking, its ergonomic finger space, combined with the adjustable angle of the nozzle, makes it easy to position and reach otherwise hard-to-access spaces, such as high cabinets or underneath car seats.

9.5 Maintenance

To empty the dirt cup, just hit the release latch to swing open the side door. Every part of the vacuum, from the nozzle to the dual-layer filter assembly, is completely washable, excluding the motor module. The pre-filter and pleated filter pieces separate effortlessly with a simple pull, allowing for a quick and thorough rinse under running water in seconds.
