I want to avoid clogs in my garbage disposal. What specific types of food waste should I avoid putting into it, and are there any best practices for using it?

A garbage disposal is basically a big piece of pipe with grinding gears that you add to your existing system. So basic practices still apply, such as avoid putting oil, grease, coffee ground, and starch down the drain. Eggshells, vegetable peels, and fruit peels are not too bad but they tend to build up over the years. Remember to always run water when using the disposal and leave the water running for 15 seconds or so after turning the disposal off to make sure everything is flushed thoroughly.
