The first thing to keep in mind is not to brew tea or coffee directly in your electric kettles. If your kettle doesn’t have an infuser it’s probably not meant for anything other than boiling water.
Doing this will leave permanent stains on your kettle and impart odd flavors on your subsequent boils. Some may say it’s okay if your kettle is made of glass and has a wide lid opening, but we advise against it.

1. How to Make Tea in a Kettle without an Infuser
If your kettle doesn’t have an infuser, you may be able to get a reusable or stainless steel infuser which often has a chain which hooks over the carafe edge. Or, you can use disposable tea bags.
- Boil the water first.
- Put loose leaf tea into your kettle, a tea bag, or a reusable infuser.
- Let it steep for 3-5 minutes or to taste or tea variety.
- Stir well, then discard loose leaf tea or tea bag before serving.
2. How to Make Tea in a Kettle with an Infuser
If you make a lot of tea or similar herbal beverages, it’s also convenient to buy a kettle with an inbuilt infuser.
- Remove the infuser from the kettle.
- Boil water.
- Fill the infuser with loose leaf tea or bagged tea.
- Insert the infuser once the water reaches its boiling point.
- Close the kettle lid securely.
- Let the tea steep for 3-5 minutes, depending on your personal taste and the type of tea.
- Remove the infuser, and enjoy.

4. How to Make Tea in a Teapot
The true tea connoisseur is likely to have a teapot. If you’re just starting out, here are some basic tips:
- Boil the water first.
- Put loose leaf tea into the teapot.
- Pour boiling water directly over the tea.
- Let it steep for 3-5 minutes or to taste or tea variety.
- Stir, then discard the loose leaf tea or tea bag before serving.
- Have a hand strainer ready or remove the insertable strainer with the brewed leaf.
Notes:
- If you use tea bags, don’t squeeze them cause they might break.
- For the best results, cover the pot for the entire steeping time.
- One tea bag or one tsp of loose tea leaf is good for a 6-ounce cup.
- If you only have a basic kettle, small bubbles floating to the top means the water is at 160°F to 170°F. If there are strings of bubbles rising from the bottom, the water is 180 to 190°F.
