Tested Using Methodology v1.0
Nutribullet SmartSense Blender Combo

Overall Verdict

The NutriBullet SmartSense is a decent option for people who blend often but don’t want to spend too much.  From green smoothies to protein shakes to frozen fruit blends, it handles all of that without much trouble. We’re very impressed with its ice-crushing capability as well. Of all the blenders we’ve tested, it was among a few ones that can crush whole cubes in just 30 seconds. With multiple container sizes, you'll also find it easier to choose the right jar for each blend without needing a separate machine.

That said, it’s pretty noisy, and that may be annoying early in the morning. Also keep your expectations low if you plan on making nut butter; the result may take more effort and come out less creamy. For everything else, however, this blender totally lives up to the hype. The controls are simple, the motor runs smoothly, and the tamper is more useful than we expected. So far, we’re happy with it.

Things We Like

  • For someone who blends often, this blender offers a strong mix of speed and convenience.
  • Ice and frozen fruit don’t feel like major obstacles during regular use.
  • The included containers make it easier to match the blender to your routine, whether you are making a quick personal drink or prepping more at once.
  • The controls are clear enough that anyone in the home can use it comfortably.
  • Everyday handling is well thought out, from opening the lid to using the tamper.

Things We Don’t Like

  • It performs best when there is enough volume in the jar, so very small, thick recipes can become frustrating.
  • The noise level can be hard to ignore during use.

As blending tasks have expanded beyond basic smoothies, so too has the need for machines that can adjust speed and timing without constant user input. And that's where the Nutribullet SmartSense Blender Combo comes in.

Generally, this is a smart blender that can modify its operation according to what it is processing, and in practice, the 1400-watt motor paired with different container sizes is meant to cover both personal servings and full-pitcher batches in one system. It also provides up to five manual speeds, along with common accessories like a handle cup, a tamper, and two to‑go lids that support simple to-go blending.

So if this blender is on your shortlist, we are going to make the decision easier. Here, we evaluate where it performs strongly, where it feels average, and where it may disappoint depending on expectations. It offers several advantages, but there are also trade-offs that you should know before buying.

8.8 Performance

In regular use, the SmartSense is fast and dependable. The 1400-watt motor helps leafy greens blend down well, frozen fruit break apart quickly, and the final texture turns out generally ultra-smooth, as long as there is enough liquid in the jar. Almond butter is a more challenging recipe though, and while results may still be worth the effort, the process isn’t as hands-off as you may imagine.

9.7 Smoothie

Velvety

Vitamix blenders have spent years earning a reputation that most machines simply can't touch, especially when it comes to green smoothies. That reputation is well deserved, but honestly, you don't need to spend that much just to get more greens into your day. The NutriBullet Smart Sense gets you surprisingly close for a fraction of the price.

We ran this test on manual control and let the machine blend naturally without much help from us. In practice, it worked through the ingredients steadily right from the start, and by the time it hit the kale, the blades broke it down so completely that no trace of its original texture made it into the final drink.

The whole thing was done in about a minute and a half, leaving behind a drink that was smooth and even all the way through. More impressively, you'll barely have to stand over or babysit it while it works. Most of the time, the blender was able to pull the ingredients straight into the blades without any help along the way.

9.5 Frozen Fruit Smoothie

Smooth

We put the NutriBullet SmartSense through a second test using a combination of different frozen fruits, but unlike the first challenge, this time, we tested it across two modes instead of relying on manual control alone, since the team wanted to see how practically its smart feature worked as well.

On manual control at maximum power, the smoothie came out remarkably smooth after just one minute of blending. For an icy blend, that’s an excellent result, even though we did have to use the tamper a little to guide the ingredients back toward the blades once the mixture stopped pulling down as consistently as it did at the beginning.

On the Smart Sense auto mode, the whole cycle completed in 30 seconds before the machine automatically shut off. There were still small flecks of fruit visible throughout, though we think it didn't affect the drinkability in any serious way. For the most part, the remaining bits were fine enough that the smoothie still went down easily. Its texture just couldn't match what manual control delivered within a single minute.

9.5 Protein Shake

Smooth

We added oats, almonds, dried berries, and protein powder to the pitcher and then ran at full speed. During the process, we didn’t have to stop or stir anything. The blender developed a strong vortex that kept everything in contact with the blade so just after about a minute, the shake was ready. But to evaluate the smoothness more closely, we then strained it through a mesh strainer. A few small particles that didn't fully liquify were caught, but they were too fine to impair the shake’s quality. Our drink was still smooth and enjoyable anyway.

In terms of speed and quality, this blender was close to the Vitamix E310 and Ninja TWISTi, and totally beat the lower-priced Hamilton Beach.

5.5 Almond Butter

Gritty

Our Nutribullet struggled considerably with this test. We added two cups of almonds and initially planned to let it emulsify until the butter was churned out as smooth as possible. At first, it looked very promising since the blender had no trouble grinding them at all. But after about 20-30 seconds, things become overwhelming very quickly, especially when the almonds got finer and finer. Somehow, these tiny pieces just stuck to the pitcher’s side and refuse to fall back toward the blades

We spent a lot of time pushing everything back down, but after 6 minutes of blending, we decided to stop the process. This was because blending any longer could risk overheating the motor while it was already obvious that the results were unlikely to improve much further. Despite our efforts, the texture still turned out admittedly uneven. It came close to almond butter, but not as creamy or spreadable as we had hoped. We think the small batch size may have played a role here, so we plan to retest it with more almonds soon.

10 Crushed Ice

We've put a lot of blenders through the ice test, and most of them struggle in predictable ways. Some leave big chunks mixed in with the fine stuff. Some just spin the ice around until you stop and shake the jar. Others simply are too weak for the task. The NutriBullet Smart Sense  is entirely different though.

It pulled the ice cubes in and crushed them almost right away, so by 30 seconds, the batch came out soft and snow-like with barely any chunks left. If icy drinks are your thing, this blender is absolutely a perfect option.

9.3 Design

A big power number makes little sense if you don't enjoy having your blender on the counter, and with the SmartSense, you absolutely do. Frankly speaking, this NutriBullet is the best-featured blender on the market, offering excellent construction, functionality, and one of the first to employ LED display, along with auto blending cycles. In addition to the stylish appearance and compact footprint, we’re a big fan of its motor, which sports a built-in overheat protection for extra peace of mind. The blending cups tend to discolor with frequent dishwasher use, but they stand the test of time if you wash them by hand.

For a standard full-sized blender, the NutriBullet SmartSense is neither small nor large. It should fit comfortably under upper cabinets if your clearance is around 18 inches or more. It’s not very heavy, either. At around 8.5 lbs, you won't find it a hassle to move around.

9.0 Build Quality

Nutribullet SmartSense Blender Combo Build Quality

Since it is such a popular NutriBullet blender, we did have high expectations of its build quality when we first received it in the lab. And honestly, we were glad that it didn't disappoint. Our SmartSense is a well-made product with securely fitted details and quality parts. Despite frequent use, its finish doesn't show any signs of scratches, which is definitely a big plus if you're picky about aesthetic.

The blade assembly features a six-prong design, which is one of the blender's biggest highlights. But to be fair, this isn't a new setup; a lot of other blenders have been successful with this approach — and there are also models that still get the job done well with just two or four prongs.

So in our opinion, the most impressive part here is the stainless steel materials. It's thick and highly durable, meaning there is no need to worry about bending or warping issues. The blade itself should last for years of regular use.

During our frozen ingredient test, we noticed that the motor base could stop in the middle of blending and then lock itself for a while. We don't want to say the cause was definitely overheating or definitely the hardness of the ingredients, because both could play a role. Typically, frozen chunks can create a tougher blending condition when they're large, packed tightly, or not mixed with enough liquid. Instead of moving freely around the jar, they can press against the blades and slow the blending flow, which forces the motor to work under higher resistance. The lockout seems to be there to protect the motor when the machine detects that the load is too heavy.

At that point, we saw the word “LOCK” appear on the small front LED display, and the controls became unresponsive. We had to wait a few minutes before the lock cleared and the blender allowed us to start another cycle. This can be a little frustrating, especially when the mixture still needs more blending, but it's necessary.

Construction-wise, the base is well-built and secure. We really liked the matte black finish which gives the blender a more modern look. Underneath, the vents help manage heat, while the anti-slip feet keep the blender from wobbling.

From small to larger batches

With the 64-ounce pitcher, you can prepare about 3 to 4 servings in one go. There is a built-in spout for mess-free pouring and the measurement lines so it's easier for you to check how much you're blending without reaching for an extra tool.

For single-serving portions, you can go with the smaller cups, but unlike the main pitcher, these cups work with a separate blade assembly. They also seal securely with both two to-go lids. So whether you want to store the drink in the fridge for later or bring it with you on the road, these add-ons have you covered.

The lid has a small center plug that you can remove when you need to add ingredients, use the tamper, or quickly check the texture. And thanks to the easy-lift tab, you can pop the lid off easier, which is especially helpful when it seals tight against the pitcher. As for the two travel lids, they both fit the cups snugly in order to prevent leaks when you're carrying them around.

The control panel lives right on top of the base, and we really appreciate how straightforward it is. There's a power button to get things started, five speed settings, and a pulse button for when you want quick, manual bursts. Everything's clearly labeled and easy to reach, so it does not take long to get used to.

The tamper fits comfortably through the lid's center opening, so we often use it when dealing with frozen ingredients and nut-based blends, and it really helps a lot.

8.2 Usability

Using the NutriBullet SmartSense is very low-effort in a good way. You don’t have to stand there guessing how long to blend or keep checking the texture every few seconds. If you want control, manual mode is simple. But if you don’t want to figure out every new recipe yourself, SmartSense Auto Mode handles the cycle for you. The trade-off is its noise since it can get pretty loud. But aside from that, it's hassle-free and well-suited for everyday blending.

9.0 Ease of Blend

This blender keeps the learning curve almost nonexistent. The pitcher twists onto the base with a satisfying click, so you know it’s locked in properly. There’s no guessing or wiggling required. The buttons also respond right away, with none of that frustrating lag where you’re not sure if your input went through. We never had to check the manual or wonder which setting to use because everything felt self-explanatory.

6.7 Noise Level

Nutribullet SmartSense Blender Combo Noise level
Max Level
101 dB

One of our testers actually flinched when they heard the high-pitched motor sound during a quick empty run, because the tone was harsher than we expected. In our noise test (where we blended ice and water), it measured 101 dB. That isn't shocking for a powerful blender and still within the common range—the real issue is the sound itself. It is sharp and has a piercing whine that can be pretty unpleasant if you're sensitive to high-pitched sounds, so to be honest, this isn't a machine we would run early in the morning when someone nearby is still asleep.

8.5 Assembly

Setting up the NutriBullet SmartSense is a breeze as the blender uses a twist-lock system, and to blend, you simply place the pitcher on the base and turn it clockwise until it clicks into place. Just keep that locking direction in mind during heavier blends, or the pitcher can loosen from the base if you turn the handle the wrong way (we actually ran into this a few times during testing).

The two smaller cups work a bit differently, though nothing feels confusing here either. They take one extra step and change the order slightly. You’ll need to screw the extractor blade onto the cup first, turn it over, and twist it into place. Most people should figure it out on the first try.

8.0 Cleanability

Nutribullet SmartSense Blender Combo Cleanability

All parts except the motor base can go in the dishwasher, but for a quick manual clean, you can let the blender run for 30 seconds with warm soapy water. Sometimes, however, this quick cycle may not be effective enough to remove all the stubborn residue, especially those often gathering underside of the blades and around the bottom groove of the container. At this point, you'll need to follow up with a dish brush or sponge.
